A Message from the Broken Lens Team:

Dear Poets, Writers, and Artists,

As you may have noticed, Broken Lens Journal has been on hiatus since last winter. While the reasons for the unannounced hiatus were varied and personal, we are aware of the importance of maintaining regular communication with the writers and artists who placed trust in us to make informed, reasonable, and timely decisions and we understand that frustrations can mount when editors are unresponsive.

That being said, we are excited to share that we are once again open for submissions, and we are planning to publish our next issue in July of this year! However, we should note that there have been some significant changes to our submission process as well as the editorial direction for the journal.

We will no longer be accepting submissions via email, except on a case-by-case basis, or via Google Forms. Instead, we have moved to Duosuma. This will help us to keep our submissions better organized as well as allow us to respond to submissions in a more timely manner. Please note that any submissions that are sent to us via email without prior permission will be archived unread.

Also, while we have enjoyed receiving visual art submissions, going forward we will only be publishing visual art by solicitation. Fiction submissions will be temporarily halted until we are able to find a full-time fiction editor. We understand that this may be disappointing, but for now we would like to focus on poetry as the primary genre of the journal. We do, however, fully intend to expand the number of genres in the journal once we are able to add more editors to the team.

We’re looking forward to reading your submissions, and we hope that our publication can continue to function as another source of great work from new, emerging, and established voices within the literary ecosystem!.

Sincerely yours,

Adam, Heather, and Isabel

SUBMIT YOUR WORK

Submission Guidelines

General Guidelines and Info:

  • Broken Lens Journal publishes new issues quarterly. Submissions are welcome year-round.

  • We do not accept work that trades in racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc.

  • Please send only one submission at a time and wait until you hear back from us before uploading a new submission.

  • Submission calls will be limited to a cap of 25 submissions. Once the limit has been reached, submissions will temporarily close until openings become available. Our response time can be up to 3 months, but may be longer, because we want to have ample time and space for everyone’s submissions to be considered.

  • Please wait until you receive a response before you submit again. We ask that you do not request feedback from the editors.

  • We are not able to pay for submissions at this time; however, we hope to do so in the future.

  • If you have published work with Broken Lens Journal during the last year, please wait until next year to submit any new work. If you send work before the year is up, the work will be archived unread and will receive no response.

  • To make sure you receive our response, set your spam filter to allow emails from brokenlensjournal@gmail.com and duosuma.com.

  • We consider only unpublished work. Work that has appeared online for any reason, including social media posts, is considered to have been previously published and should not be submitted. If work has been previously published and is submitted it will be archived unread.

  • Broken Lens Journal is open to simultaneous submissions, but please let us know immediately if work is accepted elsewhere by withdrawing the submission in Duosuma or, alternatively, emailing us at brokenlensjournal@gmail.com.

  • If you have any difficulty using this site for any reason and need alternative submission options, please reach out to us for more information at brokenlensjournal@gmail.com. Please include your name and contact information. Please note that alternative submission options will only be considered on a case-by-case basis and with permission from the editors.

  • Submissions that are sent via email without being approved by one of the editors beforehand will be archived and remain unread.

  • Please submit up to five poems and no more than ten pages of poetry per submission in one file.

  • Bios should be no more than 50 words.

  • Please add your name to your file name (e.g. John Broken_Title of Poetry Submission.pdf) and include your name and email in the header of your submission.

  • Poems should be in 12 pt Times New Roman. Submissions should be made in .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats.

  • We are not currently seeking poems in translation, however we are looking to do so in the future.

If your work is accepted for publication, Broken Lens Journal obtains First North American Serial Rights and, following publication, all rights revert to the artist. In the event new work(s) published by Broken Lens Journal are reprinted, Broken Lens Journal asks to be credited as the site wherein the work first appeared.
